The Hauschild History

Introduction:
I got this story several years ago (probably in 1992 or 1993) from the BENTALLS Store in Kingston, London. There was a little stand in that department store which sold "Family Name Histories". I did not think long, I just invested the 15 GBP and ordered the "Hauschild Family Name History" which you find below. It also included a coat of arms, which you can also see above.

Family Name History "HAUSCHILD"

The German surname Hauschild is of nickname origin, deriving from a personal or physical characteristic of its original bearer. In this instance, the surname Hauschild derives from the German term "Hauenschild" meaning literally to "break the shield", here indicating a fighter or soldier. Names that glorified weapons and war were very widespread in the Middle Ages as wars and feuds were common during that time.

The name Hauschild itself belongs to the group of names called "Satznamen" or English "imperative names". The name Hauschild is found in documents dating back to the year 1350 were the spelling is recorded as Howenschilt, in 1358 we find Houweschild, 1387 Hauschilt, in 1596 Houwdenschilt. Hausschild, Hauschill are more modern forms appearing in the nineteenth century. The name is also common in all areas of Germany. In France we find the name Talleyrand recorded since the late twelfth century, which also literally means "destroyer of the shield".

The surname Hauschild and its many variants can be found in documents dating back to the thirteenth century. One Tidericus Howescilt was a resident of Hamburg, as documents for the year 1255 indicate. One named Hawenschilt was a resident of Breslau in 1348. Immigration records and passenger lists indicate one Herman Hauschild, a labourer age 28, came to the United States in the year 1852. He sailed on the "Irma" from Hamburg to New York in the year 1852.  Jacob Hauschild was a twenty year old farmer sailing on the "Phoenix" from Hamburg to New York also in July of 1852. One Margarethe Hauschild came to America in June of 1852. She was twenty two years old and sailed on the ship "Gaston" from Bremen to New York.

A Coat of Arms was granted to a family Hauschild, which lived in the Westphalia region.
